Horton Plains National Park

Wide grasslands and cloud forests and the end of the world ... The peculiar plateau called Horton-Plains in the south of the central highlands is located at an altitude of about 2000 m and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010: lichens, moss, gnarled small trees, swamps and rolling hills overgrow this idyllic place.

The kina trees battered by the cool wind, the tall grass and the slightly hilly, foggy and rainy plain are reminiscent of the Scottish Highlands. Only bamboo and tree ferns may not really fit in Scotland.

Highlights and activities in Horton Plains National Park

The absolute highlight in the Horton Plains is a four-hour circular hike to the proverbial "World ́s End" in the southeast of the Horton Plains, a spectacular steep slope with fabulous views. This almost 10 km long hike (from the parking lot) is almost flat and is only for those who sleep early. Between 9 and 10 a.m., the Hortons Plains National Park is covered by thick veils of fog, saddening the view. But just because of the slow moving in of the clouds, it's worth getting there early and lingering.

You will also pass the 20-metre-high Baker's Falls on this round. In terms of wildlife, the most spectacular and endangered animal in the park is the most spectacular and endangered animal in the park, a primate species with an extremely pussive face.

Arrival and tour start in the Horton Plains

The starting point for a day trip in the Horton Plains National Park is usually the towns of Nuwara Eliya or Haputale, both 90 minutes away. Directly on site in the park, the overnight accommodation is very limited. You should leave around 6:00 a.m., because around 10:00 a.m. or 11:00 a.m. there is usually heavy fog in the park, which obstructs the view.

If you want to experience the Horton Plains National Park comfortably while sitting, you can take the Bandarawela to Nuwara Eliya route by train. It winds directly along the Horton-Plains National Park and offers fantastic views of the mist-shrouded jungle. From the small town of Nuwara Eliya, you can reach the park for a day tour.
